The exhibition Les mots d’Hélène brings together fifteen different recent canvases by Carol Bernier that were inspired by the writings of the poet Hélène Dorion. Over the course of many months, the two women exchanged ideas, images and feelings. As the artist explains, “I just let my impressions about her works take form. Themes such as shadow, light, earth, sky and the elements became particularly important. I said one day to Hélène that I couldn’t really speak about her work, because I felt it would be like speaking about an indefinable presence, a kind of energy both subdued and subtle. As I went deeper and deeper into Hélène’s poems, I kept touching up the paintings, right up until the very last possible moment. These canvases reflect that moment in time spent reading Hélène’s work, and how her words affected me.”
