Louis-Philippe Côté

Hippie-psyop
Oct. 14, 2015 to Nov. 14, 2015

Hippie-psyop, Louis-Philippe Côté’s second solo exhibition at Galerie Simon Blais, will feature a series of 19 recently painted small works in oil, all of them depictions of an enigmatic world at once real and dreamlike.

Côté’s creative process involves drawing from various sources of inspiration, which can be historical, philosophical, literary, or artistic in nature. Among them could be mentioned the wrltings of the 1960s counterculture poet and novelist Richard Brautigan, the prophecies of Nietzsche, and a painting from the Baroque era—here blurred to the point of becoming unrecognizable. Like reminiscences, such references are freely alluded to, combined, and repeated by the painter through the use of variably precise, impressionistic touches, resulting in paintings whose iconography is evanescent and technique, hallucinatory.
