On view in the Louis-Philippe Côté exhibition 17 Variations is a series of small, identically sized paintings—variations conjuring overtures that seem to push landscape to the limits of abstraction. Côté opts to develop them slowly, in a retreat from thought and detachment from reality allowing room for the indeterminate. Through their gaps, the richness of their hues, magmatic surfaces, colourful interstices, shimmer and eruptions of light, these paintings become extensions of an elusive vision.
