Proportio, by Françoise Sullivan (Gallery 2)

Continuing in the same vein as in her series Jeux, presented at the Gallery last year, Françoise Sullivan will show a new group of paintings whose surfaces are divided up into distinct and carefully arranged, masses of colours. In the seven works to be on view, the pictorial space is often subdivided into two sections delineated through various angles and diagonals, energizing the contrasting tones placed side by side within it. Moreover, some of the works form bold polyptychs, drawing attention to the notion of balance that the painter endeavours to explore in her work.

Following her many decades’ long contribution to Québec’s artistic heritage through her work in contemporary dance, performance, photography, and sculpture, Françoise Sullivanapproaches her practice of painting with remarkable vitality and precision. It has been her means of expression for a number of years now, and is absolutely fundamental to the whole of her creative oeuvre. Proportio will provide a foretaste of the exhibition of Françoise Sullivan’s work that will be held at the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-St-Paul in the fall of 2016.
