More than ninety years after the end of World War I, Bertrand Carrière attempted to find out what had become of the landscapes and places photographed by a young soldier during the conflict by visiting the area that was once the Western Front. The works in the exhibition Lieux mêmes give us a glimpse of how these places continue to be marked by their history, as well as how the past has been transcended. “There is an undaunted beauty in the highly singular topography of these wounded landscapes. Following its destruction, the screams, wails and moans, the land has healed, albeit slowly, nature reasserting itself in its regeneration,” writes Bertrand Carrière.
The artist would particularly like to thank the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Société de développement des arts et de la culture de Longueuil for their financial support in the creation of this series.
On Wednesday, March 31, will be held two book launches: Lieux mêmes, published by Les éditions L'instant même, and Ground Level, published by Les éditions Sagamie. The artist Bertrand Carrière will attend.
