We have taken a playful approach in mounting the exhibition Ferron/Riopelle – DUOS, which offers a look into a rich collection of works drawn from the inventories of two of Québec’s most prestigious artists’ estates, those of Marcelle Ferron and Jean Paul Riopelle. In it we have boldly mixed periods, as well as combined works of various techniques and different sizes that normally would be incompatible.
Galerie Simon Blais has represented and promoted the work of Ferronand Riopelle for over twenty years, but this is the first time it has looked at the art of these giants in a new and original way. Ferron and Riopelle pursued their careers both here in Québec and in Europe, but after 1949 they no longer had the opportunity to associate with each other as frequently as during the time they were championing the Refus global manifesto. Nevertheless, their works sometimes took—often years apart—the same graphic or gestural path, without the two artists being aware of it.
On this occasion, a catalogue that will serve as a guide for visitors and invite them to join in a guessing game will accompany the exhibition.
